Day 38
Mark 10
10:1 He arose from there and came into the borders of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Multitudes came together to him again. As he usually did, he was again teaching them.
10:2 Pharisees came to him testing him, and asked him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
10:3 He answered, "What did Moses command you?"
10:4 They said, "Moses allowed a certificate of divorce to be written, and to divorce her."
10:5 But Jesus said to them, "For your hardness of heart, he wrote you this commandment.
10:6 But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female.{Genesis 1:27}
10:7 For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will join to his wife,
10:8 and the two will become one flesh,{Genesis 2:24} so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.
10:9 What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."
10:10 In the house, his disciples asked him again about the same matter.
10:11 He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her.
10:12 If a woman herself divorces her husband, and marries another, she commits adultery."
10:13 They were bringing to him little children, that he should touch them, but the disciples rebuked those who were bringing them.
10:14 But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, "Allow the little children to come to me! Don't forbid them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
10:15 Most certainly I tell you, whoever will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child, he will in no way enter into it."
10:16 He took them in his arms, and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
10:17 As he was going out into the way, one ran to him, knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"
10:18 Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except one--God.
10:19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder,' 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not give false testimony,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and mother.'"{Exodus 20:12-16; Deuteronomy 5:16-20}
10:20 He said to him, "Teacher, I have observed all these things from my youth."
10:21 Jesus looking at him loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross."
10:22 But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.
10:23 Jesus looked around, and said to his disciples, "How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!"
10:24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answered again, "Children, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!
10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."
10:26 They were exceedingly astonished, saying to him, "Then who can be saved?"
10:27 Jesus, looking at them, said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God, for all things are possible with God."
10:28 Peter began to tell him, "Behold, we have left all, and have followed you."
10:29 Jesus said, "Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or land, for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News,
10:30 but he will receive one hundred times more now in this time, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions; and in the age to come eternal life.
10:31 But many who are first will be last; and the last first."
10:32 They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going in front of them, and they were amazed; and those who followed were afraid. He again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were going to happen to him.
10:33 "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles.
10:34 They will mock him, spit on him, scourge him, and kill him. On the third day he will rise again."
10:35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came near to him, saying, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we will ask."
10:36 He said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"
10:37 They said to him, "Grant to us that we may sit, one at your right hand, and one at your left hand, in your glory."
10:38 But Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"
10:39 They said to him, "We are able." Jesus said to them, "You shall indeed drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with;
10:40 but to sit at my right hand and at my left hand is not mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared."
10:41 When the ten heard it, they began to be indignant towards James and John.
10:42 Jesus summoned them, and said to them, "You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
10:43 But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.
10:44 Whoever of you wants to become first among you, shall be bondservant of all.
10:45 For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
10:46 They came to Jericho. As he went out from Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road.
10:47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out, and say, "Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!"
10:48 Many rebuked him, that he should be quiet, but he cried out much more, "You son of David, have mercy on me!"
10:49 Jesus stood still, and said, "Call him." They called the blind man, saying to him, "Cheer up! Get up. He is calling you!"
10:50 He, casting away his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
10:51 Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "Rhabboni,{Rhabboni is a transliteration of the Hebrew word for "great teacher."} that I may see again."
10:52 Jesus said to him, "Go your way. Your faith has made you well." Immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
Galatians 1
1:1 Paul, an apostle (not from men, neither through man, but through Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead),
1:2 and all the brothers{The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} who are with me, to the assemblies of Galatia:
1:3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ,
1:4 who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father--
1:5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
1:6 I marvel that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ to a different "good news";
1:7 and there isn't another "good news." Only there are some who trouble you, and want to pervert the Good News of Christ.
1:8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you any "good news" other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed.
1:9 As we have said before, so I now say again: if any man preaches to you any "good news" other than that which you received, let him be cursed.
1:10 For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn't be a servant of Christ.
1:11 But I make known to you, brothers, concerning the Good News which was preached by me, that it is not according to man.
1:12 For neither did I receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came to me through revelation of Jesus Christ.
1:13 For you have heard of my way of living in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the assembly of God, and ravaged it.
1:14 I advanced in the Jews' religion beyond many of my own age among my countrymen, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
1:15 But when it was the good pleasure of God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me through his grace,
1:16 to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I didn't immediately confer with flesh and blood,
1:17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia. Then I returned to Damascus.
1:18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Peter, and stayed with him fifteen days.
1:19 But of the other apostles I saw no one, except James, the Lord's brother.
1:20 Now about the things which I write to you, behold, before God, I'm not lying.
1:21 Then I came to the regions of Syria and Cilicia.
1:22 I was still unknown by face to the assemblies of Judea which were in Christ,
1:23 but they only heard: "He who once persecuted us now preaches the faith that he once tried to destroy."
1:24 And they glorified God in me.
Galatians 2
2:1 Then after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me.
2:2 I went up by revelation, and I laid before them the Good News which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.
2:3 But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
2:4 This was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;
2:5 to whom we gave no place in the way of subjection, not for an hour, that the truth of the Good News might continue with you.
2:6 But from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God doesn't show partiality to man)--they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,
2:7 but to the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the Good News for the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the Good News for the circumcision
2:8 (for he who appointed Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision appointed me also to the Gentiles);
2:9 and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision.
2:10 They only asked us to remember the poor--which very thing I was also zealous to do.
2:11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned.
2:12 For before some people came from James, he ate with the Gentiles. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
2:13 And the rest of the Jews joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
2:14 But when I saw that they didn't walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Peter before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live as the Gentiles do, and not as the Jews do, why do you compel the Gentiles to live as the Jews do?
2:15 "We, being Jews by nature, and not Gentile sinners,
2:16 yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.
2:17 But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a servant of sin? Certainly not!
2:18 For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a law-breaker.
2:19 For I, through the law, died to the law, that I might live to God.
2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.
2:21 I don't make void the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!"
